Overview
Spacedesk is a no-cost utility from datronicsoft that turns mobile and tablet devices into extra displays for a Windows PC. It’s designed for people who want to mirror their desktop or extend it onto a phone, Surface tablet, or other Windows-compatible client, enabling expanded workspace without buying additional monitors.
Primary capabilities
- Mirror your main screen or stretch your desktop across additional devices.
- Support for both duplicated and extended display modes.
- Works over a local network using wired or wireless links, as well as alternative connection methods.
Supported operating systems
- Windows 11
- Windows 10
- Windows 8.1
- Windows 7
How to install and prepare
Before trying to connect any clients, install the two drivers provided by the developer: the Windows Desktop Extension and the Windows Desktop Duplication driver. Both packages can be downloaded from the Spacedesk website. These drivers must be present on the Windows host and on any client devices that will act as additional displays.
Connecting your screens
You can link devices in several ways; ensure every device is reachable via TCP/IP:
- USB tethering
- Mobile hotspot / personal hotspot
- Wireless (Wi‑Fi) on the same LAN
- Wired LAN connection
Whichever method you choose, make sure all participating devices are on the same network or otherwise reachable for best results.
Using Spacedesk day-to-day
Interactions across the extended desktop are handled from the host computer with your keyboard and mouse. On touch-enabled clients, touch and common gestures are supported so you can interact directly on the secondary screen. Configuration and selection of mirror vs. extend modes are done through the app interface.
Known limitations
- Noticeable input or display lag can occur, even with only one additional screen connected.
- Connections may drop or become unreliable at times, depending on network conditions and device compatibility.
- Performance varies with network bandwidth, driver installation status, and device hardware.
Verdict
Spacedesk offers a straightforward, cost-free way to create multi-display setups using existing mobile devices. While it’s easy to set up and provides useful functionality, expect occasional latency and connectivity issues that may limit suitability for latency-sensitive tasks.
Alternative to consider
Deskreen (free) is a recommended alternative if you want a similar way to convert devices into secondary screens; it offers different connection and configuration choices that might better fit some workflows.
