Quick snapshot
Slay the Spire is a roguelike deck-building game available on mobile and other platforms; Humble Bundle has handled distribution for some versions. It blends strategic card play with permadeath-style progression: you assemble and refine a deck while climbing a twisting tower called the Spire, facing foes and obstacles along the way.
How the gameplay works
Each run sends your chosen character up a multi-level structure, encountering monsters, events, and shops on the way. Combat is turn-based and driven entirely by the cards in your deck—attacks, defenses, and utility cards determine how each encounter plays out. If your hit points drop to zero, that run ends and you start again from the bottom.
Characters, cards, and upgrades
- Four playable characters, each with distinct starting cards and playstyles.
- A collection of more than 350 purchasable and discoverable cards to customize your deck.
- Relics that grant passive bonuses and can permanently alter how a run feels; many are found after defeating elite enemies.
- Opportunities to bolster your deck or heal at campfires, shops, and other map events.
Procedural design and variety
The Spire’s layout is procedurally generated, so paths, encounters, and available rewards shift every time you play. That unpredictability helps keep runs fresh and increases replayability, but it also means your tactical options will depend heavily on what the RNG hands you.
Challenge and randomness
The game rewards careful planning and deck optimization, making it appealing to players who enjoy strategic depth. At the same time, card draws, random rewards, and the ever-changing map can create situations where bad luck undermines an otherwise solid strategy—some players find those losses frustrating, while others view them as part of the roguelike experience.
