Overview: What this utility does for Windows
Simple DNSCrypt is a free, open-source Windows program that serves as a frontend for dnscrypt-proxy. It configures dnscrypt-proxy so your DNS queries are sent over an encrypted channel, helping prevent outside parties from intercepting or reading the sites and services your system requests.
Why encrypt DNS traffic
- Prevents third-party observers from seeing which domains you visit, protecting privacy when working with sensitive information online.
- Reduces the chance of DNS tampering or spoofing that can redirect you to malicious sites.
- Complements (but does not always replace) other privacy tools — some VPNs protect DNS, but many DNS requests remain unencrypted by default.
Working with the Simple DNSCrypt interface
Simple DNSCrypt presents options across multiple tabs, making configuration and routine tasks more straightforward. The layout separates service controls, resolver selection, and logging/settings so you can quickly enable or disable features and pick the resolver(s) you trust without digging through complex menus.
Enabling IPv6 support
By default, Simple DNSCrypt lists IPv4 resolvers and blocks IPv6 queries. To allow IPv6 traffic:
- Open the program’s main menu and choose the settings area.
- Locate Advanced Settings and enable the toggle or option that unblocks IPv6 queries.
- Apply the change and restart the dnscrypt-proxy service or the application if required to activate the new behavior.
Alternative or complementary option
If you want a different or additional way to manage network behavior on Windows, consider FocusMe (offers a free tier). It’s primarily a productivity and access-control tool rather than a DNS encrypter, but it can be used alongside Simple DNSCrypt to limit which applications or connections are allowed on your system.
