Start private conversations easily
Signal Private Messenger is a free cross-platform app for secure messaging and calls. Built by the Signal Foundation, it uses the internet to send one-to-one and group messages, including files, photos, videos, and voice notes. A desktop web client is also available for use on computers.
Safety and privacy features
Signal employs end-to-end encryption for messages and calls, keeping conversations confidential between participants. There are no ads, and the app is designed to work reliably even on slow networks. A few notable strengths and limitations:
- No advertisements and minimal stored metadata.
- Fast delivery of messages over weak connections.
- Built-in photo editing tools and per-contact notification customization.
- Superior audio quality for voice messaging; however, video call audio may not be as refined as some competitors.
How to set up an account
Getting started is straightforward. When you open the app, you’ll first see the Terms and Privacy Policy screen and an option to restore a previous backup or account. The basic setup flow:
- Optionally grant access to your contacts (this can be skipped and enabled later).
- Enter your phone number and confirm it with the verification code sent to you; the code is usually applied automatically.
- Supply a first name for your profile and choose a four-digit PIN to protect stored data. Note: the PIN isn’t required to open the app, but it’s needed for data recovery—enable PIN reminders so you don’t forget.
Navigation and configuration
The interface centers on your recent conversations. Main controls are easy to find:
- Quick actions in the lower-right corner let you start a chat or open the camera.
- Your profile and account settings are accessible from the top-left; a menu on the top-right offers additional actions such as creating a group, marking messages as read, or inviting people.
- A search box sits beside the menu for locating chats and contacts.
In Settings you can fine-tune behavior and appearance. Important options include:
- Toggle Dark Mode and adjust the app’s visual style.
- Manage linked devices, media auto-download, and storage usage.
- Configure privacy-related controls like read receipts and app locks.
Final assessment
Signal is a strong alternative to popular messaging platforms when privacy and simplicity are priorities. It offers robust encryption, a clean interface, and useful extras like image editing and custom alerts. While video-call audio could use improvement, the app remains an excellent, free choice for secure texting and calling.
