Brief overview
ShareX is a free, open-source utility for capturing and recording your screen. It can take still images or create video/GIF recordings of any portion of your display, and includes a wide range of post-capture tools so you can annotate, edit, and share quickly. The program lives in the system tray for low-profile access and installs without bundled third-party software.
Capture options and modes
ShareX supports many ways to grab screen content, including:
- Text and automatic repeated captures
- Scrolling or long-page captures
- Manually selected regions
- Active window or entire monitor capture
- Fullscreen snapshots
- Screen recording (when you want video instead of a still)
Each mode can be triggered with customizable hotkeys, and many are configurable to include delays, cursor visibility, or layered overlays.
Editing and post-capture actions
After you capture an image or video, ShareX provides tools to refine and distribute your work:
- Thumbnail previews for both images and recordings
- Image combiner to merge multiple screenshots into one file
- On-screen ruler and guides for precise alignment
- Checksum utilities and basic file integrity tools
- Color picker and selector for sampling exact on-screen colors
Captured files can be annotated (arrows, text, shapes), have watermarks or borders applied, and then automatically exported to local folders, the clipboard, a printer, email attachments, or uploaded to hosting services and FTP.
Screen recording methods
Recording options are flexible and suitable for different needs:
- Auto Capture: records the chosen region repeatedly at set intervals
- Screen recording (GIF): produces silent animated GIFs for quick, lightweight demos
- Screen recording (FFmpeg): records video (with optional audio) and can compress in real time using codecs like x264, VP8, or Xvid
Note: to capture microphone input with the FFmpeg recorder you must have a microphone connected and selected.
Installation, interface, and power-user features
ShareX is developed as an open project and installs cleanly without extra bundled software. It runs unobtrusively from the system tray and exposes a very large set of hotkeys and automation options for users who like to tweak every detail. While basic capture-and-save workflows are simple to pick up, exploring the full feature set takes time.
Who benefits from using it
Consider ShareX if you want:
- A no-cost, lightweight alternative to commercial screen-capture suites
- Extensive customization and many hotkeys for faster workflows
- Built-in editing and automation so you can capture, refine, and share without switching apps
It may feel overwhelming to beginners because of the dense feature set, but for anyone who frequently creates annotated screenshots or quick video/GIF demos, ShareX offers exceptional value and flexibility.
