Produce polished screen recordings on your Mac
Recording your screen — also called screencasting — is an increasingly popular way to share tricks, create tutorials, and demonstrate software flows. It’s relatively quick to produce and simple to distribute, making video a great medium for short how-tos and demonstrations.
What this app does well
- Lets you capture both system audio and microphone input.
- Can highlight mouse activity and have the camera follow your pointer.
- Offers straightforward controls for selecting the area to record and changing settings mid-session.
- Exports high-quality video and supports capture rates up to 30 frames per second, which is plenty for desktop recordings.
How you control recordings
You can select a custom region and resize it at any time while recording. Preset capture sizes include:
- Full screen
- Three-quarters (3/4)
- Half screen (1/2)
- Quarter screen (1/4)
- One-eighth screen (1/8)
The interface is designed so your movies and key options are always within reach, which helps new users get productive quickly.
A few limitations to know about
One small quirk: the app doesn’t add a Dock icon or menu-bar item when launched. If the window is hidden, you can bring up the interface using the shortcut Shift‑Command‑2.
Recent fix
A permissions-related problem that blocked some people from registering the software for every user account on a Mac has been resolved.
