What Rivercast Does

Rivercast is a free mobile app that provides up-to-date river stage information for waterways across the United States. It displays current measurements and short-term forecasts so you can quickly gauge conditions for rivers, streams, and lakes.

How the app obtains and selects data

Rivercast retrieves live measurements from the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) network and automatically selects the most appropriate nearby gauge for the location you’re viewing. The app constantly refreshes its readings and forecast estimates to reflect the latest available observations.

Controls and on-screen interaction

• Tap the chart to zoom in, zoom out, or pan the timeline for a closer look at recent changes.
• Customize your displayed site by setting your preferred location and adding sites to a saved list for quick access.
• Pick a gauge color to make monitoring easier; the color switches when the water level moves above or below the current reference.

What the readings mean

• Measurements are shown either in feet or in cubic feet per second (CFS), depending on which unit you prefer.
• Selecting a river or site reveals its current reading, forecasted trend, and the exact position of the monitoring gauge on the map.
• All gauge values and forecasts come from the USGS observation and prediction products.

Network and time requirements

Rivercast requires an internet connection to fetch the latest observations and modelled forecasts. All timestamps and predictions are presented in your device’s local time zone so values align with local conditions.
