Under a Rock

Under a Rock is a procedurally generated, open-world survival crafting game set on a vivid, enigmatic island populated by unusual and oversized wildlife. It supports solo or cooperative play for small groups, emphasizes exploration and discovery of hidden areas and lore, and centers on resource gathering, crafting, base construction, and long-term survival against environmental hazards and nighttime threats. Gameplay loops focus on building and expanding shelters, scavenging diverse biomes for materials, crafting tools, weapons, and structures to improve survivability, and uncovering the island’s secrets. Randomized terrain and events drive high replayability and emergent encounters, requiring players to balance exploration with fortification and resource management.

METAL GEAR RISING: REVENGEANCE

Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance reinvents the franchise with a fast, brutal, sword-focused approach that pairs short, cinematic missions and set pieces with relentless, combo-driven encounters. The game favors aggressive, high-tempo action over stealth, keeping the narrative moving through tightly paced operations and dramatic combat moments. You play as Raiden, whose extensive cybernetic upgrades reshape movement and fighting: lightning-fast mobility, precise Blade Mode slow-motion slicing, deep combo systems, and mechanics that reward timing and experimentation. It’s best suited for players who prefer reflex-driven spectacle, stylish takedowns, and momentum-based combat, while those seeking traditional stealth or open-ended mission structures may prefer other entries in the series.

Space Engineers

Space Engineers is a sci-fi building and survival game set among asteroids, planets and orbital habitats that emphasizes engineering and construction over scripted narrative. Players mine resources, manage systems and design ships and stations using voxel-based terrain; in Survival you must maintain life support, power and production chains while dealing with threats and scarce resources, whereas Creative provides all components and materials for unrestricted sandbox experimentation. Play spans orbiting ships and stations as well as planets and asteroids, which can include hostile factions and dangerous fauna. Core challenges include fragile supply-chain and power dependencies, environmental hazards and the need to plan efficient mining, refining and manufacturing. The game appeals to creators who enjoy open-ended engineering problems and the satisfaction of seeing functional vessels and stations; for a simpler, more purely creative alternative, try Astrometica: Prologue.

Lost Legions

Lost Legions is a cooperative action-survival game for one to four players set in a richly detailed, historically inspired forest. It combines open-world exploration with resource gathering, crafting, base construction, and tactical melee and ranged combat; progression depends on scavenging, upgrading gear, and making strategic choices about when to push forward or consolidate at your camp. A layered narrative ties together four playable protagonists and a cast of NPCs, with recruitment and rescued legionaries affecting available tactics and camp capabilities. The building and crafting systems are flexible—supporting everything from simple shelters to fortified war camps—and persistent progression lets you develop your encampment and reclaim territory while exploring themes of betrayal, colonial tension, and survival.

SummerCamp

SummerCamp is an asymmetrical multiplayer horror set at a lakeside camp in the 1980s where one player becomes a supernatural Slasher hunting up to seven Counselors. Counselors must cooperate—or betray one another—to gather key items, solve environmental puzzles and pursue multiple escape routes (repairing a car, boarding a boat, or contacting authorities) while surviving tense cat‑and‑mouse encounters shaped by the Slasher’s otherworldly abilities and a nostalgic retro atmosphere. Alongside high‑tension matches, the game offers a Sandbox mode for freeform exploration, roleplay and emergent scenarios, encouraging creativity beyond the primary horror loop. The project is under active development, with ongoing content, balance and feature updates planned to expand and refine the blend of suspenseful multiplayer chases and lighter, open‑ended play.

Mini World: Block Art

Mini World: Block Art is a block-based sandbox focused on open-ended creation, exploration, and crafting, presented in a softer, chibi-like style with regionally inspired flora and fauna. Players gather resources, craft items, and build anything from simple shelters to elaborate constructions, choosing between unrestricted Creation mode, resource-driven Survival, solo play, or cooperative multiplayer. An integrated editor lets the community design and publish user-made mini-games and maps, so players can switch between building, exploring, and playing community content. The game offers a vast catalog of blocks and game elements, with many free items alongside premium content obtainable through in-game currency. Its clear visual design and expressive character models make it approachable for younger or casual players, and the combination of robust creative tools and social sharing gives it plenty of personality for anyone who wants a friendlier take on the voxel-sandbox formula.

Return from Core

Return from Core is a survival-adventure that drops you into an enormous subterranean realm after the surface has been ruined, blending tunneling and base-crafting with a strong emphasis on relationships. You dig for ores and artifacts, explore caverns full of secrets, hostile fauna, and ancient technology, and develop an underground settlement. Monster-girl allies have distinct roles—combat, farming, cooking, processing materials—and deepening bonds with them turns them into reliable partners for both fights and daily tasks. The game’s strengths are its personal character relationships, scalable automation and base systems, rewarding exploration and lore, and thorough crafting and construction; its main drawback is a resource loop that can feel repetitive for players seeking constant variety. If you want a different sandbox experience, try a broader, more open-ended crafting and building sandbox that emphasizes freeform construction, limitless mod and server options, and less structured narrative or character-driven progression.

Only Up!

Only Up! is a vertical puzzle-platformer built around a single objective: climb higher. Levels are stacked to force upward momentum, with narrow platforms, shifting obstacles, moving objects, and scarce checkpoints that reward precise timing and planning. The core experience mixes tight precision platforming with open-ended construction, offering a creative sandbox with unlimited materials and a cooperative survival mode where players collaborate on building and ascent within the same upward-focused world. Visually the game pairs bright, varied shapes with industrial and fantastical structures, which can sometimes clutter sightlines and make fast jumps harder to judge; physics and responsiveness emphasize steady performance. Its punishing, repetition-driven loop—where a single mistake can cause large setbacks—will appeal to players who enjoy high-stakes, skill-focused challenges rather than relaxed, guided experiences. For a comparable single-ascent, high-difficulty title, consider Getting Over It with Bennett Foddy.

Minecraft

Minecraft is a sandbox, block-based game that emphasizes open-ended creativity, exploration, and system-building. Worlds are procedurally generated across varied biomes and dimensions, and play supports multiple modes—creative for unrestricted building, survival for resource management and combat, adventure and spectator modes for curated experiences—and multiplayer and modding extend possibilities with community-made content, persistent servers, and custom rules. Gameplay centers on mining, crafting, and construction using a wide range of materials and devices (including automation and logic systems), with a living ecosystem of passive, neutral, and hostile mobs, achievements and optional endgame challenges, and regular updates that continually add content and quality-of-life improvements. A recent content update adds procedurally generated trial chambers filled with puzzles, combat encounters, and vault-like loot caches, plus a difficulty amplifier that increases enemy strength in

Minetest

Minetest is a creative block-building sandbox that emphasizes construction, imagination, and moddability. It provides a vast variety of blocks and distinct mechanics that let players craft large or intricate structures, with support for collaborative multiplayer play and a pleasant, approachable visual style. People use it for both learning and leisure: educators employ it to teach spatial reasoning and basic design, while casual players enjoy building, experimenting, and demolishing creations as a creative outlet or stress relief. Its flexibility, moddability, and open-ended gameplay make it a strong choice for anyone who likes sandbox building and social creativity.

Teardown

Teardown is a physics-driven demolition heist built around fully destructible voxel environments. Players reach objectives and secure loot by planning clever routes or smashing through obstacles; the campaign presents scripted jobs and a cast of characters, while a Sandbox mode removes mission constraints for open-ended experimentation. Core mechanics center on realistic physics and universal destructibility—walls, furniture, vehicles and other props respond believably to cutting, explosions and impacts—letting you solve challenges with a variety of handheld tools, weapons and improvised methods. Structural collapse and debris behavior are integral to strategy, and community-made mods, maps and tools expand the toybox; overall it blends puzzle-style planning with cathartic destruction for fans of creative demolition and heist scenarios.

Cataclysm: Dark Days Ahead

Cataclysm: Dark Days Ahead is a story-free, open-ended survival game that drops you into a harsh post-apocalyptic world where managing hunger, thirst, injuries, and mutated threats is central. It features deep base-building and crafting systems, detailed character progression, risky tactical combat, and scavenging for resources; NPC survivors can join and help turn a fragile outpost into a functioning community, but the layered mechanics create a steep learning curve that rewards time invested. If you want a different, more accessible survival-building experience, consider Minecraft, which emphasizes creative construction, simpler survival loops, and multiplayer collaboration.
