Free PC-to-PC access for work and support

There are many situations—especially at work—when you need to reach files or programs on your computer while you’re away. Likewise, letting a technician connect to your machine can simplify troubleshooting or software installation. Built-in remote access tools let you do both without physically being at the host machine.

What this technology actually does

Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP) is the underlying method that allows one computer to take control of another over a network. Using Remote Desktop on Windows 10 or 11, a second computer can display, open, edit, and save files from the first machine, or run maintenance tasks as if someone were sitting in front of it.

Roles and setup

  • Host: the computer that will be accessed remotely. It must be configured to accept incoming remote connections.
  • Client: the computer used to connect to and operate the host.
  • Connection scope: the client can be located anywhere with an internet connection, since the session occurs online.
  • Permissions: appropriate user accounts and network permissions are required on the host before remote access is allowed.

Key benefits and common uses

  • No extra third-party programs required to connect two Windows PCs when using the built-in Remote Desktop features.
  • Secure networking capabilities enable encrypted access between the two endpoints.
  • Remote file access lets you open, modify, and save documents on the host machine from wherever you are.
  • Remote troubleshooting and configuration let IT staff fix problems or install software without traveling to the physical machine.

Summary

Remote Desktop tools make it easy and convenient to link two computers for file access, IT support, or general remote work. With the host set up to permit connections, a client anywhere in the world can securely manage resources on that host.
