App snapshot

Reface — previously released as Doublicat — is a free lifestyle mobile app from NEOCORTEXT, INC. It uses deepfake-style image processing to place a user’s face onto short GIFs and brief video clips. Instead of swapping faces into movie scenes like some other tools, Reface focuses on quick, shareable GIF-based templates and lets you create personalized reaction GIFs to post on social media.

How to get started

When you open the app for the first time it will request camera access so you can take a selfie. The app asks permission to use your camera and states your face data will be used only for its services. After snapping a photo using the on-screen oval guide, the app uses that image as the template to map onto GIFs or short clips.

Content library and pricing

The main screen displays the available GIFs and short videos you can apply your face to — everything from celebrity clips to viral meme moments. Not all templates are free: new users get a three-day trial, but many premium GIFs require either a paid subscription or watching an advertisement to unlock.

Reface currently offers two subscription tiers (monthly and annual) for full access. During the trial, and with the free tier, access is limited and some content remains behind the paywall.

Editing features and constraints

The face editor is deliberately simple. You can take or upload a single selfie and the app will automatically blend that image onto the selected GIFs. There are no advanced controls for fine-tuning facial alignment, expression tracking, or multi-person captures. Because you cannot record a short video of yourself to match the template’s expressions, the resulting animations occasionally look distorted or mismatched.

Reliability and output quality

Users have reported inconsistent results even after paying for premium access. Problems include:

  • Watermarks that sometimes remain on supposedly unlocked GIFs
  • Final composites that can look unnatural or warped when expressions don’t align
  • Limited customization options that prevent fixing these problems within the app

These issues make some premium purchases feel underwhelming, especially when expected quality isn’t delivered.

Verdict and alternatives

Reface is an interesting idea with quick, easy face-swapping for GIFs, but its feature set and reliability need improvement. If you want more control over expression matching, multiple-person swaps, or consistently clean exports without watermarks, you may find better value in other face-swap or deepfake-style apps.
