Brief overview

QQ Messenger is the dominant instant messaging app in China, used by well over a billion accounts. Although it may not be as widely recognized elsewhere as some Western IM names, it combines familiar chat basics with a playful, well-crafted interface and a range of extras that make it feel like a full social platform rather than just a simple messenger.

Main communication tools

  • Robust file transfers, including the ability to pause and resume large uploads
  • Integrated voice and video calling for one-on-one and group conversations
  • Organizable contacts list with support for custom groups
  • Fun emoticons and small interactive alerts to spice up chats
  • Quick photo sharing and inline media delivery

Notable built-in extras

  • On-the-spot screen capture and short video recording you can instantly send to contacts
  • A lightweight remote-assistance tool that lets you view or control a friend’s desktop to help troubleshoot problems
  • A handful of additional utilities and shortcuts that expand its usefulness beyond text chat

Personalization and looks

QQ puts a lot of emphasis on customization:

  • Changeable interface skins, selectable message fonts, and assorted themeable elements
  • A large gallery of avatars and profile images with the option to upload your own picture
  • (Note) Attempts to fetch extra themes from the web did not work in our tests

Strengths and shortcomings

QQ’s strengths include a polished, cute visual design, feature-rich functionality, and surprisingly few advertisements compared with many other IM services. On the downside, adding new contacts felt a bit clunky at times: contacts are identified by numeric IDs rather than readable usernames, which can be less intuitive, and we experienced occasional glitches when trying to add people.

Final thoughts

Overall, QQ Messenger is more than a basic chat app — it’s a versatile communication suite with a whimsical design and thoughtful extras. If you’re curious about international alternatives to mainstream IM clients, it’s worth installing and trying the international build to see how it fits into your workflow.
