Game snapshot

Provoron is an intimate 2.5D, hand-illustrated adventure played from a side view, where you take the role of Ankou — a pale crow who’s been pushed to the margins and haunted by red, otherworldly figures. Created solo by Tara Kan, the experience sends Ankou through surreal chambers and side-scrolling sequences as he solves environmental puzzles, bonds with three adolescent companions, and seeks to mend both himself and the damaged realm around him.

How the gameplay works

The central mechanic revolves around perception and how you choose to use it; sight and sound trade places depending on Ankou’s state.

  • Closing Ankou’s eyes banishes visible red demons but amplifies audio cues, turning noises into meaningful, sometimes living, associations.
  • Leaving his eyes open keeps spatial clarity and reveals hazards that are invisible otherwise.
  • Player decisions influence relationships with the three teens and steer whether Ankou adapts to or reshapes his surroundings.
  • Puzzles are rooted in this give-and-take between sensory modes, encouraging experimentation rather than rote solutions.

Visuals and audio design

The presentation is deliberately stark: most scenes favor a near-monochrome look punctuated by striking red elements that represent inner pain. Nearly every shot appears hand-drawn, and the soundtrack and sound design are used as gameplay tools as much as atmosphere builders. Dialogue and interactions are dense with metaphor, so much of the story is conveyed through symbolism rather than exposition.

Themes and tone

Provoron reads like a personal catharsis — a mourning and repair of past wounds. Tara Kan has framed the game as therapeutic, an attempt to process difficult memories through play. As a result, the narrative can be intense and intimate; some players may find the material confronting, while others will appreciate its honesty and emotional depth.

Who this will appeal to

  • Players looking for emotionally driven indie titles that prioritize mood and metaphor over conventional action.
  • Those who enjoy puzzle design that ties directly to character mechanics and sensory shifts.
  • Gamers who may prefer quieter, more reflective stories and hand-crafted visuals.
  • Anyone who might be uncomfortable with raw portrayals of trauma should approach with caution.

Alternative pick

If you prefer a different tone or a more traditional narrative experience, consider The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring (paid). It offers a very different, epic fantasy approach compared with Provoron’s compact, introspective journey.
