Quick summary

ProjectForum is a straightforward web-based collaboration tool that blends aspects of forums and wikis. It provides a secure environment for sharing ideas, files and comments, and is designed to get up and running with minimal setup.

Getting started and system needs

  • You only need a PC to install the server component and any modern web browser to access the interface.
  • No advanced technical knowledge is required; a basic installation can be completed in minutes and the application is operable through the browser.
  • Create separate pages for different project areas such as meeting notes, task lists, and documentation to keep work organized.

Suggested alternative

  • If you’re comparing options, one commonly noted paid alternative is Minecraft: Java & Bedrock Edition.

Interface improvements

  • clearer indicators show when you are signed in with different administrator roles, and there are new controls to sign out across admin contexts
  • administration screens received a refreshed layout, including tabbed navigation, updated form and table typography, and improved page titles and exit links
  • the bottom section of forum pages has a redesigned layout with additional command icons and more consistent fonts
  • auxiliary pages (versions, track changes, sign-in, etc.) were restyled to align with the updated admin pages

Theme customization and styling

  • the previously used 'postsize' theme variable was removed; comment area sizing is now governed by CSS
  • an extra.css hook was added so you can override base-theme styles more easily while allowing future base-theme updates
  • more styling hooks are available to target different parts of forum pages with custom CSS
  • a new theme editor simplifies branding by letting you adjust colors and logos and explicitly derive themes from built-in base themes

Extended wiki and page features

  • page redirects were introduced: placing a redirect token at the top of a page will forward visitors to the target
  • page links can now render as images using the new syntax that accepts either an image id or a URL
  • in-page footnote markup has been added to support citations and explanatory notes without cluttering the main text

Fixes and miscellaneous options

  • resolved an issue in the WYSIWYG editor where characters typed directly adjacent to a link bracket could be lost when saving
  • corrected a bug that sometimes removed a newly selected file-link type in the WYSIWYG editor upon saving
  • added a site administration control to set the default activity log behavior for forums
  • for Enterprise installs, administrators can now choose whether new forums are created open or closed by default

How it helps teams

ProjectForum is aimed at groups that need lightweight, browser-accessible collaboration without the complexity of heavy project-management suites. It’s useful for organizing discussions, tracking decisions, and keeping shared resources in one place while allowing simple visual customization to match your brand.
