Quick impression

Project CARS feels like a deliberate, race-focused simulator rather than a flashy, celebrity-driven arcade title. It’s designed for players who want authentic car behavior and famous circuits more than spectacle, and it largely succeeds at that goal.

How it drives

The core of the game is its driving model. It isn’t a hardcore sim in every respect, but the handling is convincingly weighted and rewarding. The upgraded tire simulation is particularly noticeable: you can sense grip limits and the way the rubber scrapes for traction as you push a corner. Cars on different circuits each have their own character, and surface changes from track to track are meaningful.

Drivers can choose between three assistance presets (Beginner, Amateur, Pro) that alter the degree of aids and HUD information. Beginner adds steering/braking help and visual guides, while Pro removes supportive aids for a more demanding, skill-focused experience. Success depends on learning both the vehicle and the layout, not mashing the accelerator.

Controls and camera options

You can fine-tune nearly every control parameter, which is handy because some default schemes—especially on gamepads—can feel overly sensitive. The game gives you the tools to dial in steering, deadzones, and response curves to match your hardware and preference.

Camera selection supports mainly cockpit and forward-facing viewpoints; there is only a single external "follow" camera. That design choice underlines the title’s intent: it favors immersion and realistic sightlines over cinematic chase views.

Content, tracks and modes

The vehicle roster is modest but well chosen — a mix of classics, race cars and road-legal models. Where the game shines is its list of circuits: iconic venues such as Laguna Seca, Imola and Silverstone are rendered with strong detail and atmosphere.

Available modes include:

  • Online multiplayer and league-style competition
  • Free practice sessions
  • Time attack challenges
  • Single races

You can enter quick events or build a longer playthrough in career, and dedicated time trial options let you perfect lap after lap.

Career progression and presentation

The career structure allows flexible entry points: you can begin at karting and work your way up toward top-tier open-wheel series, or jump straight into higher classes if you prefer. Progression is presented with lightweight narrative touches—messages from fans and social buzz—so your rise feels tangible without a scripted story.

The visual presentation is strong: car models are detailed, tracks are attractive, and weather effects are convincing. Rain in particular looks excellent and meaningfully alters handling, though it also increases the challenge.

Sound and immersion

Audio generally supports the realism, with immersive ambient track noise and weather elements that sit behind engine sound. Some engine samples and effects occasionally feel a touch canned, but overall the soundscape contributes well to immersion, especially when conditions are changing.

Final thoughts — who this suits

Project CARS is best for players who want a racing experience with realistic feel and depth but without the full uncompromising difficulty of a pure sim. It rewards practice and track knowledge and is consistently enjoyable when you’re willing to learn.

The main downside at launch is a relatively small car list, though additional packs were expected. If you want a more expansive commercial follow-up, Project CARS 2 is the paid option to consider.
