What Private Relay Provides
Private Relay is a browser extension from the Mozilla Firefox team that helps keep your primary email address private. It generates temporary, randomized email aliases that forward incoming messages to your real inbox, so you can sign up for services or mailing lists without revealing your main address. The extension offers a simple interface that creates an alias with a single click and gives you control to disable or delete an alias whenever you choose.
Key advantages
- Lets you create a separate relay address for each account so a single breach won’t expose all your accounts.
- Blocks junk and tracking by keeping your real email off marketing and sketchy databases.
- Gives you direct control: you can turn an alias off or permanently remove it when you no longer want messages routed through it.
- Makes generating addresses fast and easy via an in-browser button, avoiding manual setup.
How it works
When you request an alias, Private Relay produces a unique, anonymous email address. Messages sent to that alias are forwarded to your actual inbox—so you continue receiving mail without sharing your primary address. If a relay starts receiving spam or you suspect it’s being tracked, you can disable it to stop delivery, or destroy it to cut off any future messages entirely.
Access and sign-up details
Private Relay is currently in an experimental alpha phase and available by invitation only. Mozilla plans to open a waitlist on the program’s website—watch for that announcement if you’re interested. To join, you’ll need to sign in with an email address; a verification code will be sent to finish creating your Firefox profile and enable the extension.
Alternatives and additional tools
- DownAlbum Free — A separate tool you might consider if you need different privacy or email-management features.
- Other privacy-focused alias services — Look for providers that offer per-site addresses, forwarding controls, and easy revocation.
Why you might want it
With online tracking and account takeovers on the rise, using aliasing tools like Private Relay reduces exposure of your main email and personal data. It’s especially useful when registering for new services, downloading resources, or testing sites—situations where you want to limit long-term exposure and keep your primary inbox tidy and secure.
