Overview and compatibility

PrimoPDF is a free Windows tool for generating PDF files. Created by the team behind Nitro PDF, it is a lightweight PDF creator compatible with Windows 7, Windows Vista, and Windows XP (both 32-bit and 64-bit). The application installs as a virtual printer, so it integrates with the standard Print dialog of most Windows programs.

Core functions and presets

PrimoPDF lets you produce PDFs with adjustable output quality and size. It offers several preconfigured output modes to match different uses:

  • Custom — build a tailored profile by choosing specific resolution, color, and downsampling rules.
  • Prepress — creates high-resolution PDFs with embedded fonts for professional printing.
  • Print — produces higher-quality files tuned for home or office printers.
  • eBook — balances file size and image compression for smooth viewing on phones, tablets, and computers.
  • Screen — creates small, low-resolution files optimized for on-screen reading rather than for printing.

Fine-tuning image and color settings

When you choose a custom profile, you can modify how images and colors are handled. Downsampling and color options include:

  • Bicubic — a resampling method for smoother image scaling.
  • Subsample — a faster, lower-quality downsampling approach.
  • Average — reduces resolution by averaging pixels within a sample area.
  • Downsampling Threshold — sets the size above which images are reduced.
  • Don’t Downsample — keeps original image resolution intact.

Color output choices:

  • Grayscale — converts images to shades of gray.
  • Mono — reduces images to pure black and white.
  • Color — preserves full color data.

Security and access controls

PrimoPDF includes basic security features so you can restrict access or actions on the generated PDF. Security settings are available from the PDF Security area of the interface and are managed via a separate dialog with these sections (presented here in a different order):

  • Permissions — control whether recipients can print, modify, copy content, or allow text access for screen readers.
  • Open password — require a code to open the document.

To protect a file, mark the appropriate boxes to enable a password and then type and confirm the passcode. If you enable permissions, you can set a permissions password and define specific restrictions. You can lock these settings as the default for future conversions, then confirm by clicking OK.

Creating PDFs: two simple methods

You can convert files to PDF quickly using either method:

  • Drag and drop: drop a supported file (Word, text, image, etc.) onto the PrimoPDF desktop icon to open the conversion dialog.
  • Virtual printer: open the document in its native application, choose File > Print, select PrimoPDF as the printer, and start the print job to generate the PDF.

In the conversion dialog you’ll find profile selection and additional controls. The panels beneath the profile list typically include (reordered here):

  • Save As — choose filename and output location.
  • Post Process — actions to run after creation.
  • Document Properties — metadata and PDF info.
  • PDF Security — password and permissions.

When choosing where to save, you can set a specific folder or select Ask when creating PDF. After confirming settings, click Save Settings (or OK) to create and open the PDF in your default viewer.

Typical uses

Individuals and small businesses use PrimoPDF when they need to:

  • Control final file size and image quality.
  • Add basic password protection and restrict actions.
  • Quickly turn documents from virtually any printable format into PDF using a familiar Print workflow.

Its straightforward interface places the most-used options—output profiles and security—within a single dialog for fast adjustments.

Comparable tools

If you need alternatives, consider these options (order changed):

  • Nitro PDF — a paid product from the same developers with more advanced editing capabilities.
  • Microsoft Print to PDF — a built-in Windows printer driver for creating PDFs at no extra cost.
  • PDFCreator — a free PDF creation utility with flexible options.
  • CutePDF — a lightweight free PDF printer driver.
  • Adobe Reader DC — a commercial suite with extensive features for viewing and editing (paid tiers).

Some entries above are free utilities; others are commercial products offering broader feature sets.

Background, reliability, and updates

PrimoPDF was launched around 2010 by the Nitro team and functions by adding a virtual printer to Windows’ Printers area. It is generally safe to use and created by a known developer, but it receives far fewer updates than Nitro’s paid applications. The company now focuses most of its development effort on its commercial offerings, so PrimoPDF’s feature set and maintenance are relatively static.
