Prelude: Dark Pain — Tactical RPG in a Bleak Realm
Prelude: Dark Pain is a turn-based tactical RPG set in the shadowed land of Statera. You play as Soren, once a battle-seasoned warrior who now forges weapons as a blacksmith, and must rally a ragtag band of champions to stand against the brutal Order of the Ashen Crusade. The game focuses on careful planning and resource trade-offs as you guide your team through dangerous encounters and difficult choices.
Core Mechanics and Combat
Combat is grid-based and turn-driven, with an emphasis on positioning, timing, and synergies between characters. Each hero brings a unique pool of abilities and two distinct talent trees that let you tailor roles and playstyles. Combining talents and skills unlocks powerful tactical combos, while limited resources and cooldowns ensure every move must be weighed carefully.
Archetypes and Team Roles
The game offers eight distinct archetypes to mix and match when assembling your squad:
- Assassin — high single-target damage and mobility for eliminating key threats quickly.
- Support — buffs, debuffs, and utility that shape the flow of battle.
- Tank — durable front-liners who control space and soak damage for allies.
- DPS — raw damage dealers built to shred enemy defenses.
- Mage — area effects and elemental control to shape engagements.
- Controller — crowd-control specialists that manipulate enemy actions and positioning.
- Ranger — ranged specialists who pressure from a distance and exploit terrain.
- Healer — dedicated recovery and sustain to keep the party alive.
Each class can be customized via talent branches and ability selection to create specialized builds or flexible hybrids.
Story Paths and Side Content
The narrative unfolds across a world scarred by an ancient corruption, where your decisions influence both the larger plot and which heroes join your cause. Beyond the main campaign, numerous side activities — labeled as World Missions — expand the lore, introduce optional recruits, and reward resources needed for progression. These missions offer varied objectives that deepen the setting and provide strategic choices about when and how to grow your roster.
Base Management and Hero Logistics
Outside of combat, you manage a settlement hub where gear is crafted and heroes are assigned tasks. Crafting and resource allocation are central to long-term success. When you send a hero on an expedition or assignment, they become temporarily unavailable for battles, adding a layer of strategic planning about who to deploy and when to dispatch them.
