Turn a Consumer Drone into a Mapping Platform
Pix4Dcapture is an Android app that converts off-the-shelf drones into tools for mapping and 3D reconstruction. Offered at no cost as a companion to Pix4D’s photogrammetry suite, it automates image collection (including both RGB and thermal captures) so you can focus on planning and results rather than manual piloting.
Available Mission Types
- Circular missions for detailed, radial coverage around a point of interest.
- Grid missions to capture evenly spaced, overlapping images for large-area mapping.
- Polygon missions that follow custom-shaped boundaries to outline irregular sites.
Fine-Tune Flight Parameters
You can tailor flight behavior to the needs of each project. Common adjustable settings include:
- Altitude — set flight height to balance ground sampling distance and coverage.
- Camera angle — tilt the sensor to emphasize façades, oblique detail, or nadir views.
- Image overlap — increase front and side overlap to improve model completeness and reconstruction quality.
These options make the app adaptable across construction, agriculture, inspection, surveying, and environmental monitoring.
Workflow, Processing, and Outputs
After a mission, captured images can be processed on your desktop or uploaded to a cloud service to produce georeferenced orthomosaics and textured 3D models. Key workflow capabilities include:
- Integration with Pix4D’s processing tools for streamlined model generation.
- Automated transfer of images from the aircraft to speed post-flight steps.
- Mission planning features that simplify repeatable data collection.
Supported Drone Hardware
Pix4Dcapture works with a broad set of consumer and prosumer aircraft from multiple manufacturers, for flexible hardware choices:
- Yuneec models supported where compatible telemetry is available.
- Parrot platforms with supported camera and control interfaces.
- DJI drones, including many popular consumer and prosumer series.
Achieving Survey-Grade Results
For higher positional accuracy, incorporate Ground Control Points (GCPs) into your workflows. Properly marked and surveyed GCPs can significantly reduce geolocation error and help achieve survey-grade deliverables when combined with careful mission planning and sufficient image overlap.
Alternative Free Option
If you’re exploring other free tools, consider Ctrl+DJI as an alternative companion app; evaluate it against your specific drone model and the features you require (mission types, thermal support, integration with processing software) before switching.
