Fast, frantic kitchen teamwork — overview
Overcooked 2 is a chaotic cooperative cooking simulator for up to four players, developed by Team17 and Ghost Town Games. It builds on the original Overcooked with smoother visuals, refined controls, and many new themed kitchens and DLC packs. While it doesn't reinvent the core formula, it polishes and expands it — making this sequel the better entry point for newcomers to the series.
Core mechanics and how you play
Players work together to prepare and serve customer orders before timers run out. Success depends on coordination: ingredient prep, cooking, assembly, plating, and delivering dishes all happen under pressure. Mistakes reduce your score, and each level requires a minimum point threshold (one star) to pass, with three stars possible on regular difficulty.
Typical kitchen tasks include:
- Baking and decorating cakes
- Assembling and cooking pizzas
- Preparing pasta dishes
- Rolling and arranging sushi
You’ll use basic kitchen actions — chop, toss, boil, fry, plate — while managing queues of orders and their individual timers.
Level variety and obstacles
Each restaurant has its own theme and recipe set, and levels are designed to make teamwork essential. Expect hazards and moving parts to keep you on your toes:
- Shifting tables, conveyor belts, and moving platforms
- Removable bridges, hazardous gaps, and other layout puzzles
- Dirty dishes, limited workspace, and timed order queues
These dynamic obstacles are what transform straightforward cooking into frantic co-op chaos.
New additions and content
Overcooked 2 keeps the original’s core gameplay but adds several notable improvements:
- Enhanced graphics and smoother animations
- New game modes and an explorable overworld map with themed chapters
- Online multiplayer in addition to local couch co-op
- Unlockable playable chefs and paid DLC missions that add maps and recipes
The main campaign returns you to the Onion Kingdom to take on The Unbread, delivering silly, fast-paced levels across imaginative kitchens like castles and raging rivers.
Single-player or multiplayer?
The game really shines with friends. Although you can play solo, tasks are designed for multiple people and are often overwhelming alone. The addition of online matchmaking helps when you don’t have local players, but Overcooked 2 is best experienced as a party title.
