Opera for iPhone — fast, efficient mobile browsing

Opera’s iPhone browser is built to help you browse more while using less data. The app favors a minimal, touch-friendly interface and uses compression technology to speed up page loads on mobile networks. Compared with competitors like Chrome and Firefox, Opera presents a slimmer design and a more streamlined user experience.

There are two earlier Opera apps for iPhone — Opera Mobile and Opera Mini. The main difference with Mini is that it routes traffic through Opera’s servers to shrink page size. The newest Opera release is a ground-up redesign that keeps many familiar tools while modernizing the look and adding fresh capabilities.

Core features and layout

Speed Dial is the home-screen hub: pin your most visited sites there for one-tap access. To the right of Speed Dial is Discover, a curated feed of news and articles you can tune by country and topic (food, sports, tech, etc.). A key data-saving option is Off‑Road mode, which compresses pages for faster loads and reduced data usage — useful on slow networks or tight plans.

Notable capabilities:

  • Fast data compression via Off‑Road mode for low-bandwidth situations
  • A Discover feed that can be customized by country and subject
  • Speed Dial shortcuts for quick access to favorite sites
  • Tab previews and a smoother swipe-based tab switcher
  • Long-press context menus for links and images, plus a tidy history view

Note: in this version, Speed Dial is the only built-in mechanism for saving favorites — there isn’t an option to “star” pages to create bookmarks as in older Opera releases.

How navigation feels

Speed Dial behaves much like iOS home screens: site shortcuts are presented as icons you can rearrange by dragging, and you can create link folders by dropping icons on each other. Swipe left from the Speed Dial page to see a clear, chronological list of recently visited sites.

Tabs are presented with larger preview thumbnails than in Opera Mini or Mobile, and swiping through open tabs feels fluid. Next to the tab overview there’s a menu for opening a private tab or closing all tabs at once. Long-pressing links opens a context menu with options for how to open them; long-pressing images offers a save option.

Performance, compatibility, and limitations

The browser uses Apple’s WebKit engine (the same core used by Safari on iOS), so web standards are well supported and most pages render correctly. With Off‑Road mode enabled, page loading speeds improve noticeably on constrained networks. A visible progress indicator would be a welcome addition for pages that require heavy downloads.

One limitation is the lack of Flash support (including Flash Video). If Flash is essential for you, consider browsers that specialize in rendering Flash content or proxying it.

AI features added to desktop Opera

Opera has introduced AI chatbots, integrating ChatGPT and ChatSonic into its desktop browsers (Opera and Opera GX) as early-access features. These tools offer conversational assistance directly in the browser, similar to other vendors that have embedded GPT-style assistants.

AI prompts let you highlight website text or type a request to generate summaries, craft social posts, or brainstorm ideas. To use this capability, enable the “AI prompts” option in the browser settings.

ChatSonic and image generation

Alongside ChatGPT-style text assistance, ChatSonic in Opera supports text-to-image generation powered by GPT-4. This lets users create images from descriptive prompts, adding a visual dimension to browsing and content creation.

Opera’s AI roadmap

Opera’s product leadership sees AI as a core element of modern browsing. The company plans to expand AI features across its browser, news, and gaming offerings, developing new capabilities and working with partners while also leveraging its own GPT-based models.

The broader trend in browsers

Generative AI features are appearing across the browser landscape. Microsoft added GPT-4 tools to Edge, and other browsers such as Brave are rolling out summarization and related AI utilities. Expect more browsers to embed AI to change how users consume and manage web content.

Quick verdict

Opera for iPhone is a clean, user-friendly browser that prioritizes speed and data efficiency. Its redesigned interface and compression options make it a strong choice for users on limited data plans or slower connections, though power users who need traditional bookmark starring or Flash support may find it lacking.
