What NVDA Provides

NVDA is a free screen reader built to help people with visual impairments access and interact with computers. It converts on-screen text into spoken words or braille output so users who have difficulty reading screens can use common applications and digital content more easily.

Main capabilities

  • Works with refreshable braille devices and supports braille input via compatible keyboards.
  • Reads text aloud using a built-in speech synthesizer; additional voices can be added via downloadable extensions.
  • Announces text or UI elements when the mouse pointer is moved over them, and can also provide audio cues for the pointer’s position.
  • Operates with mouse, keyboard, or touch input, supplying audible guidance to make navigation more precise.

Languages and extensibility

NVDA’s speech engine supports more than fifty languages, and its default synthetic voice can be swapped for other voices that users download. Because it is open-source, developers and community volunteers regularly contribute updates, plug-ins, and new features.

Installation and portability

  • Can run straight from a USB stick without installation, making it portable between machines.
  • Includes an accessible, spoken installer to make setup straightforward for visually impaired users.
  • Benefits from an active user community that produces frequent improvements and optional add-ons.

Alternative option

Recommended alternative: EyeDefender (free) — another accessible tool for navigating a computer when vision is limited.
