NMB Mkononi — Mobile banking for Tanzanians
NMB Mkononi (previously NMB Mobile) is a complimentary mobile banking application from NMB Bank Tanzania designed to give Tanzanian account holders quick access to a wide range of banking services. If you hold an NMB account and have an NMB ATM card, you can register in the app and use many banking features while on the move. With roaming enabled on your Tanzanian phone number, the app can be opened and used abroad; however, it will not work with non‑Tanzanian phone numbers.
What the app lets you do
- Move funds between NMB accounts or send money via a mobile network operator (MNO).
- View your current account balance instantly.
- Receive a digital transaction receipt that shows date and time, sender and recipient names, transaction type, amount, purpose and reference number.
- Apply for short-term credit to cover education or business needs.
- Freeze or request a replacement for a lost or compromised card.
- Withdraw cash without using a physical card at supported ATMs.
- Invest using in-app options to potentially grow your savings.
- Request an early salary payout through the salary advance service.
- Settle utility and other bill payments directly from the app.
Loans and charges
The app provides short-duration loans that can typically be repaid within 28 days. Note that borrowing through the platform usually incurs a transaction fee in addition to the principal amount. Make sure to review the fee schedule and repayment terms before accepting any credit.
Reliability and common issues
While NMB Mkononi speeds up many everyday banking tasks, users have frequently reported problems with login failures and unexpected app crashes. These stability issues have sometimes caused incomplete or failed transactions, which can be frustrating and disruptive for customers relying on the app for time‑sensitive operations.
Summary
NMB Mkononi offers Tanzanian customers a convenient route to manage money, make transfers, pay bills, handle cards, access short loans, and explore investment or salary advance options. Its breadth of features makes mobile banking more accessible, but persistent technical problems reduce reliability and may affect the overall user experience.
