Overview
Want to know the moment a favorite band drops a new track? newTunes is a Dashboard widget designed to keep you informed about recent releases from the artists you follow. It pulls artist data from your iTunes library and compiles new-release alerts into an easy-to-scan list you can refresh anytime.
How it operates
newTunes scans online stores to locate fresh material by the musicians on your list. The widget aggregates those findings and displays newly discovered songs with direct actions so you can respond quickly — purchase, pre-order, mark as a favorite, or hide tracks you don’t like.
Main capabilities
- Provides links to buy or pre-order discovered tracks, plus quick options to favorite or remove them
- Lets you refresh the artist list on demand to check for the latest releases
- Collects artist names from your local iTunes library and uses those as the basis for searches
- Crawls Amazon to gather release information for the artists you follow
Appearance and usability
The layout is intentionally simple — a straightforward list that keeps things functional. However, the visual design can be problematic: the dark blue background contrasts poorly with text, making some artist and track names harder to read. Overall, the interface feels a bit dated and could benefit from improved readability and aesthetics.
Settings and customization
- Choose how many days must pass before a track is no longer considered “new”
- Use quick-action controls next to each listing to buy, pre-order, favorite, or hide a song
Current shortcomings
- Although newTunes imports artist entries from your iTunes library, it does not perform searches directly in the iTunes Store to detect new releases.
- The visual theme reduces legibility for some users and may make scanning long lists more tiring.
