App summary
My Opal is an iPhone application built by Alistair Phillips for monitoring Opal card balances and viewing trip histories across Sydney’s transport network — trains, ferries, buses and light rail. The full/paid edition displays how much each segment of a journey cost and can show balances for several Opal cards linked to the same account. It also includes a tool to estimate the fare for an upcoming trip.
Main capabilities
- Glanceable information via an Apple Watch companion app and a Today widget for quick access.
- An interactive map of retailers and top-up points so you can find where to add value to your card.
- Support for multiple Opal cards under one login, with balances shown separately.
- Detailed journey breakdowns that indicate the fare charged for each leg.
- A fare calculator to forecast the cost of future trips.
- Requires you to supply your Opal account credentials so the app can retrieve balances and history.
Privacy, security and permissions
This app is independently developed and is not affiliated with Transport for NSW. To function it needs your Opal login information, which is transmitted over a secure HTTPS connection. By using the application you consent to your credentials being forwarded to a third party through that encrypted channel.
Additional notes and alternative
If you’re looking for a different option, a recommended alternative is Trainman (PNR) — a free train-booking/PNR app. My Opal remains focused on balance tracking, fare estimates and trip history rather than ticket booking.
