What Mosaik Does
Mosaik is a lightweight yet capable macOS app for turning your own photographs into mosaics. It provides a handful of controls so you can fine-tune how individual tiles and the final collage appear, while keeping the workflow straightforward.
How to Build a Mosaic
- Choose a primary image that will act as the template for the finished mosaic.
- Point the app at a folder of photos that will serve as the tile library for assembling the collage.
- Use the app’s controls to adjust how tiles are matched and placed to achieve the look you want.
Managing Tile Libraries
You can save a collection of tile images from the app’s contextual menu so that the same set can be reused later. Loading a previously saved materials collection removes the need to reimport the entire folder each time you create a new mosaic.
Output Settings and File Types
When exporting your mosaic, you can specify exact pixel dimensions up to a maximum of 15,000 × 15,000. There is an option to lock aspect ratio so exported dimensions maintain the proportions of the source photo.
Available export formats include:
- PNG — lossless raster format suitable for high-quality images.
- JPG — compressed format for smaller files and web use.
- BMP — uncompressed bitmap option for compatibility with older tools.
- CSV — export tile data and coordinates in a spreadsheet-friendly format.
Other Tools to Consider
- Adobe Photoshop (paid) — a feature-rich, commercial option that can be used for mosaic-like effects and advanced image editing.
