What this download provides

Microsoft Access 2010 Runtime (64-bit) is a free, lightweight package from Microsoft that lets you run Access desktop applications without installing the full Access product. It is aimed at end users who need to open and use Access-based applications, but not develop or redesign them.

What you can and cannot do with the runtime

  • Run forms, reports, macros and VBA routines created in Access and interact with the data through those interfaces.
  • View, enter, update and remove records in tables exposed through the application's front end.
  • Modify the structural design of database objects (tables, queries, forms, reports, macros or code) — this capability is intentionally disabled in the runtime environment.

The runtime is intended to let creators distribute Access applications widely without requiring each recipient to have a paid Access license; it provides runtime interaction, not full development tools.

Compatibility and supported platforms

  • The runtime is a 64-bit Windows component and is generally compatible with Windows Server releases such as Windows Server 2003, 2008 and 2012, and will also run on many modern desktop versions of Windows.
  • Access Runtime 2010 supports applications built with Access 2010, 2007 and earlier versions like Access 2000 in most cases. Newer runtimes (for example, Access 2013) removed some features, so cross-version compatibility can vary.
  • If you distribute an app to users, test it on the same runtime version they will use to avoid surprises.

How to verify your application works in the runtime

If you develop with the full Access client, launch your application using the /runtime command-line switch to emulate the runtime environment. This lets you confirm that all user-facing features operate as expected when design-mode options are not available.

Paid versions, subscription options and alternatives

  • Enterprise-level subscriptions (for example, plans that include E3 and above) typically provide the full desktop Access application for organizations that need development and distribution control.
  • Business-tier plans that include desktop Office apps (Business Standard, Business Premium and similar) also include the full Access client.
  • Personal and family consumer subscriptions generally do not include Access; web-only or basic plans (such as those focused on online apps) omit the full desktop Access app.

Note: Because Access 2010 Runtime is offered free by Microsoft, you won’t find it as a paid add-on in Microsoft 365 — but the full Access application is available in several Microsoft 365 subscription tiers if you need development and design capabilities.

Final notes

Access 2010 Runtime is a practical solution for distributing complete Access applications to users who only need to run them. If you require design, schema changes or advanced development, install the full Access client or use an appropriate Microsoft 365 plan that includes the desktop app.
