Overview of MathDoku Extended
MathDoku Extended is an Android puzzle app from Klokisoft that builds on the classic MathDoku formula. It merges the familiar grid-based arithmetic puzzles with an integrated calculation tool and several user-experience improvements, delivering a more modern and flexible play mode.
Built-in calculation helper (DigitCalc)
A key new element is DigitCalc, an embedded calculator that enumerates combinations of single-digit numbers that satisfy a target operation. When launched from within a cage, DigitCalc factors in any cells that are already fixed, filters out duplicates, and returns viable number sets that fit the cage constraints.
Controls and data entry
Input has been simplified to reduce mode switching:
- Tap briefly to add a tentative (maybe) number.
- Press and hold to commit the definitive number into a cell.
This eliminates frequent toggling between normal and pencil (maybe) modes and speeds up entry on touchscreens.
Visuals, layout, and board changes
Several interface elements were enlarged and reorganized for readability:
- A larger play grid gives more room for each cell.
- The pencil/“maybe” numbers are shown at a bigger size.
- A compact 3×3 digit pad replaces the previous input layout for clearer number selection.
- A refreshed theme brings brighter, more saturated colors for better contrast and visibility.
Functionality removed in this release
- Removal of email-based sharing of puzzles.
- Disabling of the progress-check penalty feature.
- Elimination of the scrolling banner at the top of the screen.
- Swipe gestures are no longer supported for navigation.
Recommended alternative
If you want a different, free experience, consider Memory Bootcamp — a no-cost alternative that emphasizes short-term memory exercises rather than arithmetic puzzles.
Which version might suit you best?
If you prefer enhanced usability, larger visuals, and the integrated DigitCalc helper, MathDoku Extended is likely a better fit. If you rely on the original app’s gesture controls, scrolling header, sharing by email, or progress penalties, you may prefer to continue using the classic MathDoku release.
