Margaritari is a side-scrolling, story-first JRPG that favors emotional depth over flashy spectacle. Spanning nine compact chapters, the game follows the chance meeting of two seventeen-year-old girls and unfolds into a contemplative exploration of identity, what it means to be human, and how fragile love can be.

Narrative and motifs

The core story examines themes of trauma, isolation, and connection without resorting to melodrama. Rather than overt dramatics, the plot unfolds through quiet moments, environmental storytelling, and character interactions that invite player empathy. Decisions made during play steer the narrative toward one of two distinct "true" conclusions, emphasizing personal growth and understanding.

About the protagonist

Viola is at the story’s center. A childhood accident left her with lasting physical impairment and an emotional distance from others. Years of bullying and social exclusion have made withdrawal feel like self-preservation. Her internal struggle is presented with restraint, and it’s the arrival of a mysterious girl who appears in her dreams that begins to challenge Viola’s fear of intimacy.

How it plays

Gameplay is intentionally streamlined to keep the focus on story and character:
