Bayou Bloodlines: a fresh take on mob drama

It’s been half a decade since Mafia 2, and the series is poised for a major reinvention. Mafia 3 promises a grittier, more emotionally charged story that keeps the franchise’s focus on family and loyalty while placing the action in an uncommon gaming locale.

The lead character: Lincoln Clay

You don’t step into the shoes of an Italian mobster this time. The game follows Lincoln Clay, a Vietnam veteran who, after growing up as a mixed-race orphan, found belonging in the military. Back home he struggles to fit in until he is drawn into a gang, a decision that forces him to compromise his principles. When the Mafia destroys his surrogate family during a turf war, Clay’s search for vengeance becomes the engine of the narrative.

Rise to power: assembling allies and territories

To topple the established Italian crime syndicate and remake New Orleans in your image, you won’t act alone. The campaign centers on forging alliances with other small criminal crews and expanding your own operations — winning respect and territory piece by piece until you can challenge the old order.

Gameplay: tactics and combat options

The open world encourages reconnaissance and planning before you launch attacks on rival factions. Combat is varied and player-directed:

  • Period firearms such as revolvers and other sidearms feature prominently, alongside precision shooting mechanics.
  • Expect traditional cover-based gunplay complemented by melee confrontations and stealth-based approaches.
  • You’ll be able to scout locations, gather intelligence, and choose how to disrupt enemy operations rather than rushing in blindly.

A distinct setting: New Orleans, 1968

Moving away from the more familiar 1950s New York and Chicago backdrops, Mafia 3 is set in a vividly recreated 1968 New Orleans. The era provides rich social and historical context for the story, giving the developers plenty of material to shape a unique atmosphere that stands apart from earlier entries.

Soundtrack and tone

With so much iconic music tied to the period, the score and licensed tracks should play a major role in establishing the mood. Even if other elements fall short, the soundtrack alone is likely to deliver a memorable sense of time and place.

Release window and platforms

Mafia 3 is scheduled for release sometime during 2K’s 2016 fiscal year. Expect it on PC, Xbox One, and PlayStation 4 between April 1 and December 31 of the following year.
