Quick snapshot
Is sneaking into school at night to swipe exam answers worth the risk? Lunch Lady is a 3D indie survival-horror where you and friends sneak through dark corridors trying to recover a set of exam answer pages while a murderous cafeteria worker stalks the halls. Made by Manic Mice, the game focuses on tense cooperative play and escalating threat as you collect more pages.
Core premise
You play as one of several prankish students who break into school after hours to steal the final exam answer sheets. Your objective is to locate all 10 pages scattered around the building and escape. Meanwhile, a grotesque, homicidal lunch lady prowls the hallways with violent intentions far beyond detention.
Gameplay and objectives
- Up to four players can join an online co-op session to search the map together.
- Collect all ten pages and unlock doors by finding keys placed around the school.
- The enemy’s presence is linked to player movement: moving attracts her, and her speed and aggression increase the more pages a player is carrying.
Difficulty and replay value
The game offers three difficulty settings—Normal, Hard, and Insane—but even Normal can be quite unforgiving due to randomized item spawns and enemy locations. That unpredictable placement increases replayability: no two runs feel exactly the same. Progression is included as well; you can level up to unlock additional playable characters.
Enemy behavior and survival mechanics
If the lunch lady catches you, your character will be incapacitated and forced to crawl. A medkit is required to restore yourself, or teammates can revive you with theirs. The AI can feel erratic at times, with an often frustratingly large catch-radius, which some players might interpret as unfair or “cheating.”
Atmosphere and presentation
The game builds tension effectively through ominous ambient sounds and proximity voice chat, making encounters nerve-wracking. That said, some character models look odd or unpolished, which can undercut immersion for certain players.
Strengths and weaknesses
- Strength: High tension and unpredictable matches make multiplayer runs thrilling.
- Weakness: Occasional rough visuals and questionable enemy reach can feel frustrating.
- Strength: Cooperative play and randomized elements boost replay potential.
- Weakness: The AI’s inconsistent behavior may make the experience feel unfair at times.
