Overview: simple, lightweight screen capture

LICEcap is a compact desktop utility for grabbing a chosen portion of your screen and saving the result as an animated GIF or the program’s lossless LCF format. Its uncluttered interface and tiny installer make it a popular pick for quick demos, short tutorials, or any situation where you want an animated screenshot without a steep learning curve.

Getting started and interface

When you launch LICEcap you’ll see a transparent, resizable frame that you drag over the area you want to record. Hit Record to begin capturing; Pause is available if you need to insert a pause or add a caption frame mid-recording. You can move the capture window while recording, but you cannot change its size once recording has started, so set the frame dimensions before you press Record.

A global hotkey (Shift + Space by default) toggles pause, and the tool can optionally record mouse clicks so the pointer activity is visible in the output. LICEcap also shows elapsed time and can include a simple title frame at the beginning of recordings.

Output formats and file considerations

LICEcap exports primarily to GIF, which is widely supported for embedding in web pages and presentations. GIFs are convenient but can grow large quickly; for example, a short 5–10 second clip can easily be several hundred kilobytes. If you need smaller files or higher fidelity, LCF (LICEcap’s lossless format) offers better compression and color handling (up to ~265 colors per frame) and preserves timestamps.

Files saved as LCF can be played back in compatible tools (such as the developer’s REAPER utility) and converted to PNG, GIF, or JPG via command-line utilities. Because LCF is lossless, it’s preferable when you plan further processing or conversion before sharing.

Practical uses and workflow

LICEcap is well suited to:

  • Fast demonstration clips for social posts, bug repros, and short how‑tos.
  • Creating animated screenshots for documentation or bug reports.
  • Recording short interactions where minimal setup and low overhead are priorities.

For longer screencasts or projects that require trimming, transitions, or voice narration, you’ll need a separate editor—LICEcap does not include editing features.

Key features (compact list)

  • Pause/resume during recording, with hotkey support
  • Adjustable capture frame that can be moved while recording
  • Option to record mouse clicks and show elapsed time
  • Exports to GIF and lossless LCF formats
  • Lightweight installer and low system overhead

Advantages and limits (reordered highlights)

  • No built-in video editing or advanced post-production tools
  • Extremely easy setup and minimal interface for quick use
  • Output files (GIF) can be relatively large compared to modern video codecs
  • Compatible with Windows and macOS and performs well on modest hardware
  • LCF format offers higher quality and precise timestamping if you need lossless captures

Alternatives to consider

If you need features LICEcap lacks, consider other tools:

  • GifCam — a similarly simple GIF-focused recorder
  • FastStone Capture — for more complete screenshot and recording options
  • CamStudio — when basic video recording with editing add-ons is desired
  • Snagit or other commercial tools — for advanced editing and production workflows

Bottom line

For straightforward animated screenshots and quick desktop clips, LICEcap is a reliable, no-frills choice: tiny install, simple controls, and two output options (GIF and LCF). If your workflow requires editing, long-form recordings, or smaller final file sizes, pair LICEcap with additional tools or choose a more feature-rich recorder.
