Explore the beta edition of LibreOffice
LibreOffice Fresh is the experimental release channel for the LibreOffice suite. It delivers the newest features and improvements, but because it's a beta build some additions may never appear in the stable release and the software can be less reliable than a production version.
Applications bundled with the suite
- Impress — The presentation tool comparable to PowerPoint, suitable for slide decks and multimedia presentations.
- Writer — Full-featured word processor that opens and edits DOC, DOCX, RTF, ODT and other common document formats.
- Math — A dedicated formula editor for creating and editing mathematical expressions.
- Base — A database front end similar to Microsoft Access for designing and managing local databases.
- Calc — Spreadsheet software equivalent to Excel, for calculations, charts and data analysis.
- Draw — A vector-based drawing and diagramming app for illustrations and page layout.
You can extend each application’s capabilities with extensions and plug-ins.
Navigation and appearance
The initial menu in LibreOffice gives quick access to each app, letting you pick the component you need right away. The visual design has been refined compared with older builds, but many users will find the layout reminiscent of classic Microsoft Office interfaces.
Cost, stability, and alternatives
LibreOffice is free and open-source, making it a strong no-cost alternative to commercial office suites. Keep in mind that the Fresh branch is intended for testing: expect occasional crashes or unfinished features.
If you need a paid, supported option or different workflows, consider alternatives such as:
- Microsoft 365 (including Microsoft Word) — a commercial suite with guaranteed support and cloud integration.
- Google Workspace (Docs, Sheets, Slides) — cloud-native apps for collaboration and real-time editing.
- OnlyOffice — another desktop and cloud office suite with good Microsoft document compatibility.
Quick summary
LibreOffice Fresh is ideal for users who want to try the latest enhancements and don’t mind possible instability. For production-critical work, use the stable LibreOffice release or a commercial solution.
