Quick overview
Kingdoms and Castles is a medieval city-building game where you begin with a tiny cluster of homes and are responsible for turning it into a thriving town. Your goal is to expand your settlement, keep your residents content, and defend them from seasonal and human dangers that threaten their lives and livelihoods.
Expand and shape your town
You’ll start out with only a handful of thatched cottages, but as your resources and population grow, so will the variety of buildings and infrastructure available. Plan the layout carefully: efficient placement of food production, housing, and public works will allow your village to evolve into a bustling city with everything from marketplaces to strategic defenses.
- Miscellaneous civic and production buildings (markets, granaries, workshops) to support daily life and trade
- Bridges and roads to connect districts and improve transport links
- Windmills and other resource-processing structures to increase output
- Wells and water sources for health and fire prevention
- Defensive works such as walls, towers, and gates to deter invaders
Protect the populace from danger
Life in a medieval settlement is precarious. Harsh winters, contagious illness, accidental blazes, and hostile raiders can all undo your hard work if you’re not prepared. Keep watch over your people’s welfare, invest in emergency services, and reinforce vulnerable points in your town to reduce casualties and damage.
- Viking raids and other armed incursions — strengthen walls and station troops to repel attackers
- Fire outbreaks — use stone buildings and maintain wells to limit spreading flames
- Plague and illness — provide medical structures and isolate sick villagers when necessary
- Freezing and extreme cold — stockpile food and fuel, and ensure adequate shelter for the population
Balance expansion with safety measures: a well-defended, well-fed, and content population will allow your realm to grow steadily and withstand the crises that come with the age.
