First impressions

Insurgency is a title I respect more than I actively enjoy. Running through its modern combat scenarios, I keep returning to the same conclusion: I like the idea of being a soldier in a virtual setting, but the stark realism of a simulated warzone doesn’t appeal to me, even as a game.

The feel of combat

One advantage of virtual warfare is obvious — you don’t actually get killed — yet Insurgency does an exceptional job of conveying everything else that comes with fighting on a real battlefield. For most players, each engagement feels chaotic: dust and debris, a confusing jumble of sound, and gunfire that too often ends in an early death. I frequently begin rounds already disoriented, and while I can handle the standard first-person controls, I often fail to translate past experience into effective play.

Getting picked off

Death greets me around almost every corner. More skilled opponents spot and eliminate me while I’m still trying to figure out where the shots came from. Tactics tend to evaporate under that pressure; my focus narrows to my weapon and the objective marker, and that tunnel vision leads me to sprint toward goals without adequate caution — only to be downed and forced to wait out a 30-second respawn.

Loadout choices matter

When you do spawn, you get a short period in the barracks to pick equipment. With limited slots available, juggling weapons, attachments, and gear becomes the most strategically engaging part of the experience. Deciding whether to trade the precision of a red dot sight for heavier body armor is a constant tension. I tend to prioritize aiming aids, but realistically I should consider protection if I want to survive longer.

Final verdict

Insurgency excels at what it sets out to be: a pared-down, realistic shooter that strips away many of the arcade conventions found in similar games. It’s a well-designed, unforgiving challenge, and it convinced me that sitting behind a monitor is as close to a real warzone as I want to get.

Alternatives worth trying

  • Call of Duty (recent entries) — faster-paced and more arcade-like for players who want quicker, less punishing matches.
  • GTA: Vice City (paid) — a very different, story-driven open-world pick if you want to escape the grind of realistic shooters.
  • Battlefield series — blends large-scale combat with more forgiving mechanics and cinematic moments.
