Instagram remains one of the most-used social networks worldwide, centered on sharing photos, videos, and everyday moments. On a PC, the service is available in a simplified form that focuses on visual storytelling and keeping you connected with friends and creators, but it doesn’t replicate every mobile capability.

How the PC version is built

Rather than a native Windows or macOS program, the desktop offering is delivered as a Progressive Web App (PWA) — effectively a browser-wrapped version of the site. That approach makes the platform accessible on larger screens with familiar navigation, but some mobile-specific tools are absent.

Key things you can do from a computer

• Discover new creators, posts, and videos via the Explore area.
• Share photos and videos to your feed and profile directly from your desktop.
• Catch up on Reels and Stories while browsing on a bigger display.
• Scroll through and interact with the posts in your personal feed.
• Send and receive private messages using the Messenger-powered chat system.

What’s not available or is limited

• Mobile-style video effects and advanced in-app editing tools are largely missing, so polished video production is hard to achieve.
• Many creative features—such as stickers, audio mixing, and ready-made Reels templates—are not included.
• Filters, detailed clip trimming, and other nuanced editing options you’d expect on a phone are reduced or absent.

When the desktop app makes sense

If you want a straightforward way to browse content, watch creators’ videos, keep up with Stories, and send messages without switching to a phone, the PC experience is convenient and functional. For full creative control—advanced editing, special effects, and the complete Reels toolset—you’ll still want the mobile app.
