Keep your Mac awake with InsomniaX
InsomniaX is a small utility for macOS that prevents a MacBook from automatically sleeping when the lid is closed. That makes it possible to keep audio playing through external speakers or continue background tasks while the machine appears closed.
How it works
After installation, InsomniaX places an icon in the menu bar. Click that icon to toggle the keep-awake state on or off. For security, enabling or disabling the feature requires your administrator password.
There are also manual sleep controls: you can choose to put only the display to sleep or to put the entire system to sleep whenever you want. In addition, InsomniaX keeps an activity log you can open to review actions it has taken.
Settings and preferences
- Configure whether the app launches automatically when your Mac is connected to power.
- Adjust other preferences from the app’s settings panel to match your workflow.
- Use the menu-bar controls for quick access to enable/disable behavior without digging into System Preferences.
Important safety note
Running a MacBook with the lid closed can cause heat to build up because ventilation is reduced. Avoid leaving the machine clamshell-closed for long periods, especially under heavy CPU load. Use this feature cautiously to prevent overheating and potential hardware issues.
