Installing and troubleshooting on Windows

Note that many HEIF pictures are encoded with HEVC; for those you may also need the HEVC Video Extensions from the Microsoft Store.

How to get it:

1. Open the Microsoft Store and search for HEIF Image Extensions, then download and install the package.
2. If you open a HEIF/HEIC file and it won’t display, search the Store for HEVC Video Extensions and install that as well.
3. Once both components are present, HEIF/HEIC files should display in Photos and File Explorer.

If problems continue, reset the extension:

• Open Settings
• Go to Apps (or Apps & features)
• Locate HEIF Image Extensions in the list
• Choose Advanced options, then select Reset

Performing a reset commonly clears misconfigurations and restores normal behavior.

How HEIF compares to JPEG

HEIF is more feature-rich than JPEG, but compatibility varies.

Primary trade-offs:

• Compatibility: JPEG is supported nearly everywhere, while HEIF support depends on OS and application updates.
• Efficiency: HEIF typically produces much smaller files at comparable or better quality.
• Features: HEIF can store HDR, transparency, and multiple images/frames inside a single file — capabilities JPEG lacks.
