Getting the party going
Somehow, house parties always reach the same moment: someone suggests a game and everyone starts hunting for paper, pens or other props. The search kills momentum. Imagine instead pulling out your phone and starting instantly — that’s the appeal of Heads Up!, a flash-card style app that blends elements of charades and identity-guessing games into a single, fast party activity.
How the game operates
The idea is straightforward: you hold your device against your forehead while the display shows words or names that the rest of the group must describe or act out. The standard release includes a set of starter topic packs, and additional themed packs are available as in-app purchases.
Available starter and additional packs (examples)
- Accents and dialects
- Movie titles and film-related clues
- Animal-themed prompts
- Superhero characters (in-app purchase)
- Video game characters (in-app purchase)
A couple of quick notes: the initial decks are entertaining enough to get you started, but I found myself buying extra packs (Superhero and Videogame) after one playthrough. Beware — once the group is warmed up, it’s easy to keep spending.
Controls and gameplay flow
Using the app is intentionally simple. Pick a deck, explain any special rules shown on the first card, then press start. Hold the screen toward the crowd and a one-minute timer begins. Team members act out or describe each prompt; the person holding the device tries to guess as many as possible within 60 seconds.
Interaction is handled with the device’s motion sensors:
- Tilt the device down to mark a correct guess (the gyroscope records it).
- Tilt the device up to pass on a card.
- A running score summary appears at the end of the round.
Recording the fun
One feature that sets the app apart from pen-and-paper versions is the option to record the round using the device’s front-facing camera. Those clips can be hilarious, especially when the performers aren’t sure what they’re trying to portray — for example, I once watched my mum attempt a Faith Hill impression with the Superstar pack, and the video captured a priceless, indecipherable performance that everyone still laughs about.
Design and presentation
Visually and functionally, the app focuses on clarity. Cards use large, high-contrast text so prompts are readable from across a room — an important factor for buzzing or crowded parties. Audio cues (countdown beeps, correct-answer sounds, and pass tones) reinforce the pacing and help maintain the energy of each round.
Why it’s a great party option
Yes, you could replicate much of this with paper and a timer, but having the game ready on your phone or tablet makes it faster, cleaner, and more novel. While some decks skew toward North American references, the format itself is universally accessible: quick to learn, easy to play, and a reliable way to keep people laughing and interacting.
