Brief overview
Max is a streaming service from WarnerMedia (AT&T) that combines premium HBO programming with new originals and a large library of movies and series from associated labels like Warner Bros., New Line Cinema, DC, and CNN. The platform highlights user-friendly features such as offline viewing and parental safeguards, but currently does not offer 4K streams or closed captions.
Content mix and highlights
- Vast slate of HBO hits alongside exclusive Max Originals and theatrical titles from WarnerMedia labels.
- Anime, classic films, and contemporary popular shows added to the catalog.
- An ad-free viewing experience with a carefully curated home page that surfaces featured titles and recommendations.
App layout and account controls
- Navigate the app using Home, Browse, and Profile tabs at the bottom of the screen; account settings are located inside your Profile.
- From Settings you can manage connected devices, review billing information, adjust playback preferences, and opt out of automatic updates.
- Multiple user profiles and parental control options let different household members keep personalized queues and viewing restrictions.
Offline downloads and rules
- You can store up to five identical copies of a single title across all devices.
- Once you begin playback of a downloaded title, you usually have a 48-hour window to finish it.
- Downloads generally must be started within 30 days of saving them.
- The app allows up to thirty downloaded episodes or movies on a device at any one time.
Transition from HBO apps to Max
HBO consolidated its streaming offerings under the Max brand as part of a platform refresh. HBO Go users were migrated to the new service, and HBO Now was rebranded simply as HBO. Existing HBO Max subscribers can continue their access by updating or reinstalling the app; no new subscription purchase is required.
Strengths and current drawbacks
- Strengths: deep catalog of premium HBO content, strong selection of WarnerMedia titles, easy-to-use interface, offline play, and multiple profiles.
- Limitations: absence of 4K-resolution content and a lack of closed caption support at present.
Alternatives and when to choose them
- If you only want HBO’s original series, the HBO-branded offering provides the core lineup.
- If you prefer a wider variety that includes the full WarnerMedia catalog and new Max Originals, stick with Max.
- Consider other streaming services or trial offers if 4K or robust captioning is a priority for you.
