Quick summary
Hard Lads is a free, short indie simulation by Robert Yang that riffs on a 2015 viral British clip of young men messing around with a folding chair. Often described tongue-in-cheek as a “masculinity simulator,” the game shows shirtless lads goofing around and includes some LGBT themes. It’s generally suitable for teens (PG-13) due to partial nudity, alcohol and tobacco use, and light physical comedy.
What you do in the game
You take the role of the person filming the scene — but also direct how it unfolds. Two central characters begin the scene in a stiff pose; you move the camera and select one of four on-screen actions to trigger different interactions. The choices and their effects include:
- Chair: send the ragdoll flying and batter someone around for comic effect.
- Kiss: initiate an awkward/funny intimate moment between characters.
- Bottle: manipulate an arm to make the character drink or spill alcohol.
- Cigarette: light and puff for the expected silly outcomes.
Clicking the camera’s focus onto one of these action boxes enters a “recording” mode so you can control timing and framing. Repeating knockouts causes an absurd escalation: folding chairs rain down and stack until a final cutscene plays, sending a character drifting away to a humorous tune.
Unlockables and extra content
Beyond the gag-heavy replayability, each complete run can unlock a classical painting reproduction — notably images that reference the myth of Icarus — rewarding players who experiment with different outcomes.
Content and suitability
- Alcohol consumption
- Mild physical humor/brief violence
- Partial clothing or shirtlessness
- Smoking and casual LGBT themes
These elements give the game a PG-13 feel rather than adult-only content, but players should be aware of the depictions listed above.
Strengths and limitations
Hard Lads is more than a straight meme-to-game conversion: it invents alternate scenarios and delivers surreal, replayable moments that make it fun for people who enjoy hunting for secrets. Its main weaknesses are brevity and subtlety — the experience is short, and the game doesn’t make its hidden elements obvious, so casual players might miss much of what it hides.
