Valve returns to Half-Life in full VR
Half-Life: Alyx is Valve’s modern VR entry in the Half-Life saga. It isn’t a direct sequel to the first two games but is set chronologically between them. Players control Alyx Vance as she and her father, Eli, mount a covert resistance against the Combine occupation. This is a premium, VR-first title that requires a compatible headset and a capable PC to run its detailed visuals and physics-driven systems.
Gameplay and player experience
Half-Life: Alyx emphasizes close interaction with the world and a tactile, physics-based combat system. Expect:
- Puzzle-solving that uses environmental objects in inventive ways
- Up-close, visceral firefights and encounters
- Exploration of richly detailed locales and emergent situations
- Hands-on interactions with nearly everything in the environment
This entry is the most expansive VR project in the franchise so far, designed to fully exploit head-tracked input and realistic object physics.
Characters and locations you’ll revisit
The game brings back many hallmarks of the series while expanding on them:
- The alien Vortigaunts return, voiced once again by Tony Todd
- The enigmatic G-Man reappears, with Mike Shapiro providing the voice
- City 17 and the towering Citadel serve as key settings for major confrontations
- Ellen McLain lends her voice to the Combine Overwatch’s synthesized announcements
These familiar elements are woven into new scenarios that deepen the lead-up to events seen in Half-Life 2.
New mechanics and notable changes
Alyx introduces several distinct differences from previous games:
- Broad compatibility with many VR headsets means you’re not limited to a single platform
- The gravity gloves replace the Zero Point Energy Field Manipulator, allowing you to pull, lift, and hurl objects from a distance
- Alyx speaks as an active, voiced protagonist; Ozioma Akagha provides her voice in this title (Merle Dandridge does not return)
- Headcrabs are redesigned to be more aggressive and terrifying—especially in VR, where they can leap toward the player’s face
- Dialogue and character interactions are more present, integrating story beats into play rather than isolating them
These changes shift some of the series’ traditional mechanics into a more immersive, narrative-forward VR format.
Who should play
If you enjoyed earlier Half-Life games or want a VR experience that blends storytelling with tactile, physics-driven gameplay, Half-Life: Alyx is strongly recommended. As a prequel, it fills in narrative gaps leading to Half-Life 2 while delivering a highly immersive, hands-on experience that highlights what current VR hardware can do.
