Quick overview

Google Voice is a free mobile phone service that assigns you a dedicated phone number you can link to multiple devices so you won’t miss important calls. It includes automatic voicemail transcription, the ability to save or forward messages (including sending them to your email), and basic VoIP features at no cost. Note that the service is region-restricted and does not support emergency calling.

How call routing works

Google Voice forwards incoming calls to every device you’ve connected to the account. You can tailor which device rings for specific callers and even set schedules so certain numbers reach different devices at different times. For example:

  • Personal contacts can ring only your phone.
  • Work numbers can be sent straight to voicemail outside business hours. You can also record active calls by pressing a button; recordings can be retained indefinitely if you choose.

Transcription, filtering, and message management

The app converts voicemails into text so you can read messages instead of listening to them. It also offers tools to manage unwanted communication:

  • Automatic spam detection and the option to block callers.
  • Flexible forwarding and filtering settings for calls, texts, and voicemails.
  • The ability to save, forward, or email transcribed voicemails for later reference.

Recent product changes

Google Voice has been updated with interface and feature improvements:

  • Certain Google Workspace and SIP Link customers can now merge a second inbound or outbound call into an ongoing conversation, enabling three-way calls. This is currently not available to users of the free consumer tier.
  • The in-call user interface has been redesigned to make controls more visible and easier to use, with clearer merge/transfer buttons and hold indicators — a layout more closely aligned with Google Meet.

Competitors and alternatives

If you’re comparing options, Google Voice is often considered alongside other VoIP providers such as:

  • Nextiva
  • Sideline
  • Telzio
  • OpenPhone

Why you might choose it

Google Voice is a lightweight, cost-free VoIP solution ideal for mobile use. It centralizes calls, texts, and voicemails across devices, reduces time spent dealing with unwanted calls through automatic filtering, and gives you straightforward controls for routing and saving messages.
