Anki

Anki is a free flashcard program built around spaced repetition and active recall to improve long-term retention. It offers customizable card types (including cloze deletions and reverse cards), support for multimedia, templating and tagging, shareable decks, a searchable browser, detailed study statistics, and a scheduler that adjusts review intervals based on how well you recall items. Well suited for learners managing large volumes of information—such as language students, medical learners, and exam takers—Anki rewards an upfront investment in setup and learning its features. The system can feel complex at first, so best practices are to make concise, single-concept cards, review consistently, and consider starting with pre-made decks you can adapt; alternatives to explore include other flashcard and study platforms that prioritize simplicity or built-in collaboration features.

Cram

Cram is a study app for creating digital flashcards and timed quizzes with an approachable interface suitable for beginners and advanced learners. It supports building custom decks with text prompts and answers, running practice exams and multiple-choice assessments, and using interactive game modes to make review sessions more engaging. The app offers study modes ranging from straightforward recall drills to gamified exercises and enables users to exchange decks for group study and shared resources. It's well suited for students preparing for exams, professionals studying for certifications, and anyone who benefits from spaced repetition and active retrieval to improve retention and performance.

It combines guided techniques and practical exercises with customizable drills, curated passages, pacing tools, and progress tracking presented in a clean, easy-to-use interface. JLearnIt

JLearnIt is a free multilingual vocabulary companion (Dutch, Hebrew, Italian, German, Spanish, French, English) that organizes vocabulary into themed groups, accepts partial words and incomplete sentences for translation, and lets you save personal word lists and categorize entries for targeted practice. It tracks performance to avoid repeatedly quizzing you on mastered items. The app records scores and learning history to reduce unnecessary repetition and adapts to learner needs; you can add custom entries to tailor study from beginner to advanced. A recommended complementary tool is Anki, a spaced-repetition flashcard application for long-term retention.

iKanji

iKanji is a kanji learning and reference app that provides a structured path for studying individual characters and their readings, with lessons suited to beginners through advanced learners. Key features include progress monitoring and personalized study plans, writing drills and stroke-order practice, spaced-repetition flashcards, short quizzes and timed tests, and vocabulary tools that connect kanji to common words and meanings. The interface is clean and user-friendly, and study sessions can be tailored with performance stats to focus on areas that need improvement. This tool is well suited to students, self-learners, and professionals aiming to strengthen Japanese reading and writing skills; its mix of practice modes and tracking helps make kanji study more manageable and engaging.

Kana Flash

Kana Flash is a learning tool that helps users master hiragana and katakana through repeated exposure using a large set of flashcards that pair each character with a visual cue and a pronunciation hint, allowing self-paced review and short, focused practice sessions rather than lengthy lessons. It’s well suited to beginners or casual learners who want simple, bite-sized practice for character recognition; alternatives to consider include spaced-repetition flashcard systems like Anki for long-term retention and gamified language platforms like Duolingo for broader Japanese study.

AlgoApp

AlgoApp is a free spaced-repetition flashcard program designed to help learners retain information by timing reviews so items are revisited just before they’re likely to be forgotten. It supports creating and organizing decks with flexible formatting, tags, templates, and multimedia (images and audio), and includes a review scheduler plus progress dashboards that show due items, accuracy trends, and time spent studying to help adapt focus and track learning over time. It’s well suited to students and professionals who want an approachable interface, automated spacing, and clear analytics for long-term study; card customization and media support accommodate different learning styles. As an alternative, FocusAny offers a different workflow and minimalist interface with similar features such as study statistics, reminders, and multimedia support for cards.

RemNote

RemNote is a free note-taking app that combines structured notes with built-in spaced repetition to turn study material into reviewable units. It lets you create flashcards directly from notes, organize content in nested outlines, embed multimedia and richly format text, and link ideas across documents to build a connected knowledge base; review intervals are scheduled automatically using spaced-repetition timing. By spacing repetitions to occur just before forgetting, it strengthens long-term recall and reduces last-minute cramming, making it useful for students preparing for exams, professionals retaining technical or procedural knowledge, and lifelong learners who want a systematic approach to mastering new topics.

Mental Case

Mental Case is a flashcard-driven study tool that helps information stick and can also handle everyday memory tasks. Create cards by entering text and optionally adding images, schedule review reminders, and run review sessions in slideshow mode; integrated audio playback supports pronunciation practice and language learning. You can customize the look of review sessions with different slideshow themes and quickly assemble unique cards using photos. As with any flashcard system, its usefulness depends on whether flashcard-based study suits your learning style.
