Overview
Ghostbusters World brings ghost-hunting to your neighborhood using augmented reality. At a glance it feels like a mash-up of two well-known AR experiences: the franchise lore of Ghostbusters combined with location-based mechanics familiar to other AR titles. That similarity isn’t inherently negative, but it raises the question of whether the game does enough to create its own identity beyond the obvious inspiration.
Getting started
To play you’ll need to move around in the real world — the in-game map mirrors actual locations. Ghosts spawn across the map and you must approach them physically to interact. Once you’re close enough, an encounter begins; you then fight to lower a ghost’s health and finally capture it. The basic flow is exploration, encounter, combat, and capture, repeated as you wander.
Battle system and progression
Combat leans more heavily on RPG conventions than many other AR titles. You use tools inspired by the movies, such as the Proton Beam, to damage opponents before attempting to trap them. Captured ghosts can be leveled up and improved for future fights, and the game’s raid battles adopt a turn-based structure that rewards teamwork. Grouping with friends makes it possible to tackle much stronger foes — including some iconic, larger-than-life enemies from the franchise.
Key combat and progression features:
- Raid fights that use turn-based mechanics for coordinated multiplayer battles
- Methods for powering up and evolving captured ghosts for tougher encounters
- Immersive AR camera effects that place enemies in your real environment
- Weapon-based tactics (for example, beam attacks) required to weaken and ensnare spirits
Available play modes
The game offers several distinct ways to play:
- A story-driven campaign featuring new narrative content written by Erik Burnham of the Ghostbusters comics
- Player-versus-player matches where you can test your roster against other trainers
- Open-world exploration mode that rewards walking and discovery across real-world locations
You can use the Story mode to level up your collection for competitive PVP, or hop straight into multiplayer battles for immediate competition.
How it differentiates itself
It’s hard to ignore the resemblance to other location-based AR hits, but Ghostbusters World does take care to weave the series’ mythology into its systems. Collecting familiar ghosts, items, and characters adds a layer of fan service that can be genuinely thrilling for followers of the films and comics. While the core loop will feel familiar to players of other AR games, the Ghostbusters theme and deeper RPG mechanics give it distinct flavors that may appeal to both franchise fans and AR enthusiasts.
