Put your ethics on trial
Frostpunk is a survival-focused city-builder from 11 bit studios set in an imagined, catastrophic ice age. You lead a compact community gathered around a massive coal-fired Generator and must keep them alive while managing scarce resources, infrastructure, and the collective morale of your people.
Two distinct campaign types
Establishing the settlement
In the main settlement scenario, your objective is to construct and sustain a functioning town around the Generator. You’ll manage warmth, food, housing, and healthcare while sending scouts into the frozen wastes to collect materials and locate other survivors. Growth and survival hinge on careful resource allocation and the choices you impose on your populace.
Preserving knowledge and culture
The second campaign revolves around a group of scientists and their mission to salvage humanity’s heritage. You shepherd arks filled with cultural artifacts and research, relocating them to a safer site while confronting fresh logistical and ethical obstacles. Both campaigns force you to weigh long‑term goals against immediate needs.
Core mechanics and systems
The gameplay focuses on tight resource management and tough trade-offs. Key systems include:
- Constructing and upgrading buildings to provide shelter and services
- Researching technologies via a tech tree to expand options and improve living standards
- Dispatching expeditions to scavenge supplies and find survivors
- Monitoring temperature, worker allocation, and public order to prevent collapse
Hard moral choices you’ll face
Your leadership decisions can be morally fraught and have lasting consequences:
- Turning to extreme measures for food and survival
- Instituting strict curfews or other authoritarian controls
- Assigning children to work in order to keep the settlement functioning
These dilemmas force you to balance the needs of individuals against the survival of the group, and different approaches lead to very different outcomes.
Presentation, replay value, and shortcomings
- Limited construction variety and fewer customization options than some other city-builders
- Multiple endings that reflect the moral path you choose
- An evocative soundtrack that reinforces the game’s bleak atmosphere
- Several playable scenarios that change objectives and challenges, boosting replayability
- Overall thoughtful design that delivers a unique, tense experience
Final thoughts
Frostpunk offers a bleak, immersive world where strategic planning and ethical judgment are equally important. It’s challenging and atmospheric, rewarding players who can balance practical needs with the difficult human choices required to survive.
