A beloved JRPG arrives on Android
Final Fantasy VII, one of the most influential and best-selling JRPGs, is now available on Android. Square Enix has adapted the original title for modern touchscreens so longtime fans can play the classic wherever they go. The core narrative remains intact, but a few interface and convenience tweaks have been made to suit smartphones.
Story, characters, and how it plays
The Android release follows the same plot as the original: you join Cloud Strife, a mercenary allied with the eco-activist group AVALANCHE, and travel with a memorable cast across the world of Midgar and beyond. The storyline and events are preserved without additions to the plot.
Controls have been reworked for touch devices. You can choose between a virtual analog stick or a fixed 4-way digital pad, and the on-screen controls include an opacity slider so they obstruct the view as little as possible.
Added quality-of-life options
- Max Stats — An instant-stat boost that sets every playable character to their maximum attributes. This is essentially a permanent cheat: once enabled, you cannot revert characters to their previous stats, so use it with care.
- Disable random encounters — You can turn off enemy fights on both world and area maps, which is useful if you want to focus on the story or avoid battles in difficult situations.
Compatibility, bugs, and saving behavior
Not every Android handset will run the game perfectly. Square Enix provides a list of models that were tested, but inclusion on that list does not guarantee flawless performance on every device.
A notable bug can stop vehicles (for example the buggy, submarine, or airship) from moving after players board or disembark; the problem depends on timing and terrain. The only known workaround is to restart the app and load a saved game, so frequent manual saves are strongly recommended. Some users have also reported that AutoSave does not always preserve progress reliably, so do not rely solely on it.
Storage and download requirements
The game requires approximately 4 GB of free space to begin the download and will occupy about 2 GB after installation. Because of the large files involved, expect the download to take some time depending on your connection.
Overall impression
Final Fantasy VII on Android delivers the nostalgic experience of a landmark RPG with touch-friendly controls and a couple of modern conveniences. Despite its sizeable storage needs and a few technical issues, it remains a compelling way to replay or discover one of the genre’s defining titles.
