What “X” means and project history
The “X” in FCEUX reflects its role as an all-in-one emulator: it brings together functionality from several forks of the original FCE Ultra project. The goal was to combine components such as FCEU rerecording, FCEUXD, FCEUXDSP (including the CE build), FCEU-mm, and the original FCEU into a single, comprehensive tool.

- Low resource usage: designed to be lightweight so it runs well on most systems.
- Wide controller support and the ability to save and record gameplay sessions.
- Flexible compatibility across many system configurations.

Using it with your game library
FCEUX itself does not include game ROMs. To play, keep your NES game files on your PC or external storage and open them with the emulator. Once loaded, games run easily thanks to the emulator’s optimized performance.
Alternate recommendation
If you’re looking for an unrelated development tool that was mentioned alongside FCEUX, PyCharm Professional is a commercial IDE for Python development. It serves a completely different purpose from emulation software but may be useful if you do scripting, tool development, or other programming tasks related to ROM tools or emulator extensions.
