Free up space by removing duplicate items
Having a roomy hard drive doesn’t prevent duplicate files from accumulating. Even with careful organization, it's common to end up with extra copies—MP3s and photos are frequent culprits. Removing those repeats is an easy way to reclaim storage.
Recommended no-cost duplicate cleaner
Fast Duplicate File Finder is a free utility that helps locate and eliminate duplicate files from selected folders. You can include subfolders in the scan and it detects duplicates across any file types. Note: it does not provide custom file-type filter rules, so you can’t limit scans by specific extensions.
After a scan completes, duplicates appear in a results panel where you can inspect individual files. The app includes a basic viewer that supports image previews, plain-text files and audio playback, making it straightforward to verify which copies you want to remove.
Selection assistance and caveats
The program offers an “Auto Check” feature that can mark duplicate items for deletion automatically, but the behavior can be confusing: it appears to rely on the selection of older-dated files to decide which copies to keep or remove. Always review selections before deleting, and use the preview pane to confirm file contents.
Keyboard shortcuts for quick list management are supported:
- Ctrl+A — selects every file shown in the results.
- Ctrl+I — toggles the checked state of the currently selected items.
Practical tips
- Run scans on folders where media or downloads tend to pile up (music, photos, temp folders) to find the largest savings.
- Use the viewer to check files before confirming deletions, especially for photos and documents that may have similar names.
- Consider enabling the option to skip empty files so zero-byte items don’t clutter results.
What’s new
- Option added to ignore zero-byte files during scanning.
- Auto-selection runs much faster when handling long lists of duplicates.
- Overall scanning performance has been significantly improved.
- Ctrl+I now toggles the checked/unchecked status for selected entries.
- Ctrl+A selects every entry in the results list.
