Quick summary
F18 Carrier Landing is a realistic flight-simulator focused on landing modern jets onto an aircraft carrier. The core challenge is stopping your jet within roughly 500 feet (about 150 meters) of deck — a brief runway that demands precise throttle and afterburner management.
Plane roster
- A-6 Intruder — a distinct handling profile for a medium attack aircraft.
- C-2A Greyhound — designed for carrier logistics, it flies and lands differently than fighters.
- F-14 Tomcat — heavier, swing-wing handling that requires a different technique.
- F/A-18 Hornet — the primary jet in the title with its own flight characteristics.
Each aircraft controls a little differently, so switching airframes is a good way to practice varied approaches and landings.
Core gameplay elements
F18 Carrier Landing places you in fully modeled 3D cockpits and asks you to master a variety of naval aviation tasks:
- Conduct patrols and photographic reconnaissance missions.
- Perform in-flight refueling while maintaining formation and speed.
- Complete a series of dozen-plus missions, each with slightly different approach or weather conditions.
All landing sequences occur on carrier decks; land-based airfield approaches are not included at present.
Replay system and controls
One useful training tool is the short replay feature: the game offers 30-second multi-camera replays of your landings so you can review technique from several angles. Note that these replays look impressive but cannot currently be exported or saved. You can also use a mobile device as a remote controller for throttle and other inputs.
Visuals and audio
The title’s presentation is a standout — detailed cockpits, a functioning Head-Up Display, changing weather effects, and convincing afterburner and engine sounds give a convincing immersion more commonly seen in higher-budget sims.
Strengths and limits
Pros:
- Highly realistic carrier landing experience.
- Strong audiovisual fidelity and immersive cockpit instrumentation.
Cons:
- No combat engagements or weapon systems implemented — gameplay is non-combat focused.
- All approaches are carrier-based; additional airfield types would broaden variety.
- Replays cannot be saved outside the game.
Overall, this will appeal most to players who enjoy precision flying and landing practice rather than air combat.
