What ExplorerPatcher does
ExplorerPatcher is a free, open-source utility that restores many familiar Windows 10 desktop behaviors on Windows 11. Rather than acting like a standalone app, it injects functionality at a low level (as a DLL) so you can regain classic taskbar behavior, smaller icons, and labeled taskbar buttons, plus a broad set of customization choices.
Alternative you can try
- StartAllBack — a popular, no-cost alternative that also focuses on bringing back classic Windows UI elements while offering its own configuration options.
Installing ExplorerPatcher
Before running the installer, place the downloaded file into your Windows system folder (for example, C:\Windows). This allows ExplorerPatcher’s components to load alongside the OS.
Recommended installation steps:
- Ensure your PC has an active internet connection while running the installer.
- Copy the installer into the Windows system directory and then launch it.
- After the setup finishes, restart your computer to apply the restored components.
Configuring the restored interface
Once ExplorerPatcher is active, you can adjust its behavior from the taskbar:
- Right-click the taskbar and choose Properties to open the configuration panel.
- Swap the Windows 11 File Explorer command bar and modern context menu for the classic context menus if you prefer.
- Select separate actions for left- and right-click on the network icon.
- Replace the modern Windows Search UI with the older Windows 7–style search box, or turn search off entirely.
- Optionally disable immersive menus and other mitigation features if you want a purely classic experience.
Limitations and caveats
- The patcher does not support pinning shortcuts to the taskbar in the same way some native UIs do.
- Because ExplorerPatcher works by altering system behavior, changes may require a reboot and could interact with future Windows updates. Back up important data and create a system restore point before making deep customizations.
Why use ExplorerPatcher
If you prefer the look and workflow of Windows 10 but want to keep selected Windows 11 improvements, ExplorerPatcher gives you the flexibility to mix and match features from both versions so your desktop behaves the way you like.
